One million signatures to get gay marriage throughout Europe


One Million Signatures endorsed the request of an equal marriage across the European Union. To this end ExpoGays presented yesterday to mark the World Day Against Homophobia, a campaign that will launch a citizens' initiative in favor of gay marriage in Europe.

This mechanism was adopted by the European Commission last February 16, 2011 and allows presenting a million signatures of citizens of the EU in the European Parliament a group of EU nationals can apply directly to the European Commission to amend the legislation.

Gay marriage is only legal in Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Belgium and the Netherlands, that is, five of twenty EU member countries, and civil unions, in the above, plus Denmark, Finland, United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Luxembourg and Austria and Hungary in unregistered cohabitation arrangements, ie fourteen (plus two) of twenty.

However, the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union sets out the equality of all European citizens before the law (Article 20) and explicitly prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation (Article 21):
