Reactions to Charter the Catholic Church against

The Archbishop of Bogota and president of the Colombian Episcopal Conference, Archbishop Ruben Salazar Gomez, sent a letter against adoption by homosexual couples to be read today in the Palm Sunday Mass. The letter attacks the possibility that the Constitutional Court authorized adoption by same-sex couples in Colombia.

Among the arguments used by Salazar explained that the "natural" family is made up of a man and a woman and that adoption must be provided in support of child welfare.

The words of Archbishop representative of no one in Colombia, come to prove once again that the Church seeks to interfere in the political and judicial issues in the country. Mr. Ruben Salazar represents an archaic institution that in recent decades has lost all credibility for harboring pedophiles, sex offenders and atheists.

According to the newspaper the Herald argued the representative Bureau of LGBT in Barranquilla, Heriberto Mejia "The Church has always and has been discriminated against our rights. The religious should do is put on the table for discussion legal and ethical arguments, not questions of faith without legal objectivity. "

Another representative of the LGBT Committee Barranquilla, Hemel Noren said that in Colombia required by the Constitution and not the Church. "If the law approves the adoption of children in same-sex couples, look for areas of respect for that decision and do not encourage homophobia" Noren said, adding that such decisions are made leaders that "we have chosen the most. To this extent represent the thoughts and desires of the community. Something to be respected. " Via

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE EPISCOPAL CONFERENCE
THE FAITHFUL CATHOLICS AND CITIZENS OF GOODWILL

Palm Sunday, 17 April 2011

Dear brothers and sisters:

As is known, in the coming weeks, the Constitutional Court shall utter sentence in recognition of the adoption of children by couples formed by same sex. The joy of children according to tradition, welcomed Jesus during his entry into Jerusalem, gives me the opportunity to address you, faithful Catholics and citizens of good will, to reaffirm the Church's clear position on this sensitive and important question.

I would first of all, show clearly that the Church in Colombia is deeply concerned as they are recognized and effectively protected the legitimate rights of all citizens, without discrimination. We believe in an open and inclusive society and condemn it all possible act of social abuse or violence against homosexuals or members other minorities. With motherly love, the Church welcomes all men and women, whatever their condition. We know that, regardless of sexual orientation or even sexual behavior of each, everyone has the same fundamental identity: being a creature and, by grace, child of God.

is precisely out of love and respect to this great dignity inherent in every man and woman, homosexual or not, and demands from the Church, the State and society, sincerity and frankness, that Catholics oppose the Minors can be trusted for adoption to couples made up of same-sex and reject a decision by the Constitutional Court in this sense. We oppose with conviction because we have reasons to support our position, not only because of religious or moral. I think it is necessary and appropriate to share with you, dear brothers, to be our spokesmen in the different environments they frequent, at home, at work, with friends.

Our first reason is the nature of the family, the essential pillar of society that is founded on love and commitment between a man and a woman. This is the principle that, with full evidence was taken in Article 42 of the Constitution. There is no room for doubt: our children have the right to be born, educated and grow in a family consisting of a father and a mother, biologically distinct and complementary genders.

Our second reason is the legal status of adoption that is primarily and excellence, according to international law and internal legislation, a measure of protection (art. 61, Children's Code). Adoption is not a "right" of the adoptive parents, whether gay or not, but a measure in the child. Raising the question of adoption as a "problem of discrimination" of gay couples is, even unconsciously, to pass above the interests of the child, the true purpose of adoption, the aspirations, demands and desires of those seeking to adopt.

Our third motivation reflects the need to respect the Rule of Law must have ethical and social values of most citizens. To make a decision as important as regards the Constitutional Court now must take into account that the vast majority of Colombians have spoken against the adoption of children by same-sex couples. Moreover, we believe that such decisions should be made more open political space for healthy discussion of ideas, more representative of democratic ideals, more close to the real concerns of families and the Colombian people.

Our fourth motivation is of caution: though as some say, yes there are serious studies supported by the scientific community, to bring out doubts and reservations about the suitability of gay couples to give minors an optimal space psycho-emotional development and social integration. Such studies must be taken into account when making a decision that could affect the welfare of our children.

I hope that the Constitutional Court takes into account these arguments and decision in full compliance with citizens and constitutional values that founded and enrich coexistence of our nation. Given the uncertainty, however, I invite you dear brothers and sisters to remain vigilant and alert, ready to defend the true nature of the family and the rights of minors, to be effectively protected by all state institutions.

impart my blessing to all, asking the Lord for the peace of our beloved country,

+ Archbishop Ruben Salazar Gomez of Bogota

President of the Episcopal Conference
